Karl (or Carl) Tausig was an unfortunately very short-lived pupil of Liszt's, and was known by his contemporaries as being a pianist of incredible talent and skill, rivalling or even exceeding that of his teacher. In his short life he turned out a small number of compositions and arrangements; among 6 treatments of various movements from Beethoven's string quartets is this Cavatina from one of the late quartets.
It is a very straightforward setting of a simple original: intensely personal, eschewing virtuosity and flourish. Tausig chooses to avoid Beethoven's polymeter for an approximation in 3/4 time.
