Paperboy the electronic game was released by Tiger Electronics in 1988. It was based on the iconic arcade game Paperboy. The Paperboy arcade cabinet featured a unique iconic bicycle handlebar controller, and had some of the best music ever produced for an arcade cabinet. It was truly one of the best arcade games ever produced, and is fondly remembered.
The LCD game tried to faithfully recreate this experience on a small portable device. It did a decent job of recreating the houses and streets, and the obstacles that paperboy encountered in the arcade game, but in a paired down version. There was only one street that you drove down continuously. And the enemies were the same but just repeated. It lacked the variety of the arcade. The idea was to score points by delivering newspapers. A correctly delivered paper would score points while a missed house would mean it wasn't on your delivery round the next day meaning you couldn't score points from delivering there. You got points for smashing the windows of the non subscriber houses.
Paperboy had to avoid cars, drain covers, and various enemies who came down the street. If he hit anything he lost a life. The LCD game was over when you lost three lives, or had no houses to deliver to.
Unlike the arcade game the bonus level was missing but this is to be expected due to the limitations of the LCD game.
The LCD game came covered in the same decals that adorned the arcade cabinet, and was an impressive looking game. Tiger made a decent attempt at recreating the game.
It is by far probably the best of the handheld arcade conversions released by Tiger. So is well worth looking out for.
