Exploring Edinburgh, Scotland with Kids

Next on our UK family adventure, we explored Edinburgh, Scotland with our three kids! We visited Camera Obscura and the World of Illusions, walked along the Royal Mile, and hiked up Arthur's Seat for incredible views of the city and the North Sea. We also stopped by Greyfriars Kirkyard, where several gravestones may have inspired names from the Harry Potter series. To round out our time in the city, we spent an afternoon at the National Museum of Scotland. After Edinburgh, we headed to Dunblane for a few days and visited the impressive Wallace Monument.

Our family spent a month exploring the United Kingdom, and Edinburgh was one of our favorite stops. We settled into our hotel, checked out the swimming pool, and found a good rhythm for exploring the city. Since we typically book a single hotel room for the five of us, our kids take turns sleeping on the floor or a pull-out bed, depending on the space. We're usually out adventuring during the day anyway.

One of our goals while traveling is to introduce our kids to new cultures and experiences. Andy has also picked up lots of budget travel tips, which we hope to share in another video. Each morning before exploring, our kids completed a few pages of their homeschool math and language arts workbooks.

Camera Obscura and the World of Illusions was a big hit with the kids. They loved walking through the Vortex Tunnel, escaping the Mirror Maze, and seeing how lights and mirrors can create endless reflections.

Another day, we braved the wind and hiked to the summit of Arthur's Seat, an extinct volcano. The climb was manageable for all three kids, and the views from the top were unforgettable.

Walking down the Royal Mile was another highlight, with its beautiful stone buildings and historic charm.

On a very rainy afternoon, we visited Greyfriars Kirkyard. Despite the downpour, it was amazing to see gravestones with names like Riddell, Moodie, McGonagall, Potter, and Cruikshanks — many of which may have inspired characters in the Harry Potter series.

We also spent time at the National Museum of Scotland, exploring galleries filled with gemstones, animal displays, fashion exhibits, and aviation history. It was fascinating for both kids and adults.

After Edinburgh, we drove to Dunblane, a peaceful small town where we stayed with a host through Servas, an international network that connects travelers with local families. Our host was incredibly welcoming, and we enjoyed exploring the town, visiting a local church, and taking walks through the neighborhood park.

One afternoon, we visited the National Wallace Monument. Even though we arrived too late to climb the tower, the hike and views overlooking Stirling were well worth the trip. Built in the 1860s in a Victorian Gothic style, the monument honors Sir William Wallace and makes a striking landmark on the Scottish landscape.

Next on our UK family adventure, we're heading to France to explore Nice and Marcelle and to swim in the Mediterranean Sea!
