Textile finishing refers to the final processes applied to fabric after weaving or knitting, dyeing, or printing — to enhance appearance, performance, and feel.
🔄 Types of Finishing:
1. Mechanical Finishing
These involve physical treatments without chemicals.
Calendering – Smoothens and adds luster using heated rollers.
Raising/Brushing – Pulls fibers to create a fuzzy surface (e.g., flannel).
Sanforizing – Pre-shrinks fabric to prevent further shrinkage.
Compacting – Reduces fabric stretch/shrinkage (mostly for knits).
2. Chemical Finishing
Uses chemical agents to give special properties.
Softening – Adds a smooth, soft hand feel (silicone or fatty acid softeners).
Stiffening – Adds body to the fabric (using starch or resins).
Water Repellent Finish – Makes fabric hydrophobic (e.g., fluorocarbon).

Antimicrobial Finish – Prevents bacteria and odor (used in sportswear, hospital fabrics).
Anti-pilling Finish – Reduces fuzz and bobbling.
Wrinkle Resistant/Crease Recovery – For easy-care garments (resin-treated).
3. Special Finishes
Advanced or smart textile functions:
UV Protection Finish – Blocks harmful ultraviolet rays.
Moisture Management – Enhances wicking (athleisure, sportswear).
Fragrance / Aroma Finish – Adds long-lasting scent.
Thermochromic / Photochromic Finish – Color changes with heat/light.
