Standing majestically atop a hill near Salem, Sankagiri Fort is one of Tamil Nadu’s most historically significant and architecturally complex forts. Known for its unique entryways with dramatic names like “Urutti Vittan Paarai”, “Thol Urichaan Medu”, and “Thongi Vittan Kuzhi”, this fortress isn't just stone and mortar — it’s a silent witness to centuries of power struggles, military strategy, and cultural fusion.
Originally constructed in the 15th century by the Vijayanagar Empire, the fort was later fortified by Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan, and eventually the British, who added 9 distinct gates for layered security. Its structure stretches across 1200 feet in elevation, making it one of the tallest hill forts in Tamil Nadu, with 12 concentric defensive walls, 14 massive gateways, secret chambers, tunnels, granaries, and even ancient water conservation systems.
The fort played a crucial role as a military base, tax collection center, and prison for Indian freedom fighters. It was here that Dheeran Chinnamalai, a valiant Kongu Nadu chieftain, was hanged by the British in 1805. His execution site, along with the gallows, still remains intact, reminding us of the fort’s tragic yet heroic legacy.
Religious syncretism is beautifully evident at Sankagiri Fort, housing:
An Anjaneya Temple at the peak
The ancient Varadaraja Perumal Temple, open during Saturdays in Purattasi
Two Islamic dargahs, including Dastagir Masjid and Keyth Pir Mosque
Ruins of military barracks, granaries, step wells, and watch towers
Notable gates include:
Puli Muga Vaasal (Tiger-face gate) – the first entry point with animal-themed architecture
Rokkam Thitti Vaasal – used for trade and toll collection
Company Gate – built by the British East India Company
Kaal Vaasal, Raja Vaasal, and the mysterious Kizhakku Vaasal and Merku Vaasal
This fort has witnessed the rise and fall of dynasties, from the Pandyas and Vijayanagara to the colonial British. Despite being protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, the site is slowly deteriorating due to lack of maintenance.
🙏 Whether you're a history buff, spiritual seeker, or heritage traveler, Sankagiri Fort offers a gripping journey into Tamil Nadu’s resistance, culture, and architectural brilliance.
