Today, I’m having a permaculture moment. I’ve been working on these mini hügelkultur beds. Check this out: I’ve lined the outside with decaying wood, then added sticks, plant debris, mulch, and topped it all off with soil mixed with some biochar. Things are already starting to grow!
Here’s one I’m still finishing—see how the dirt is still mounded up? But I’m getting there. One key principle of permaculture is maximizing borders, and I was thinking about that as I raked up this mulch.
See this? This mulch has been sitting here for a while, and right at the border between the mulch and the soil, you get this dark, rich, nutrient-dense compost. It’s like nature’s magic happening over time—composting underneath the mulch layer.
I’ve been scooping it up and adding it to the beds. Look at this—it’s beautiful, fine, nutrient-rich soil, perfect for growing.
So that’s the process—decaying wood, plant debris, tons of mulch, and then this amazing compost. Things are planted, and pretty soon, these beds will be popping with life!”**
