PER COSA E PER QUALI MOTIVI SI SCRIVONO I LIBRI DI STORIA?

In questa Conferenza sulla figura dello storico del VI secolo d.C. Procopio di Cesarea (500-562 circa), cercherò di proporre alcune possibili e parziali risposte all’interrogativo del titolo. Al giorno d’oggi la così detta Filosofia della Storia sembra essere una materia passata di moda, tuttavia si potrebbe affermare come, in fondo, un poco lo sia sempre stata e fuori dalle rotte della conoscenza umana. Forse le persone non vogliono ragionare e interrogarsi sul significato della loro esistenza e su quella degli esseri umani che li hanno preceduti. La figura di Procopio di Cesarea, per la sua lontananza nel tempo e il suo unire diversi piani di lettura degli eventi storici, quello presentabile e dichiaratamente nobile, insieme al lato meno edificante dei protagonisti delle stesse vicende, porta con sé una serie di interrogativi sul senso del racconto storico, argomenti dei quali si discuterà in questo filmato.

WHAT AND FOR WHAT REASONS ARE HISTORY BOOKS WRITTEN?

In this lecture on the figure of the historian of the 6th century AD. Procopius of Caesarea (c. 500-562), I will try to propose some possible and partial answers to the question of the title. Nowadays, the so-called Philosophy of History seems to be a subject that has gone out of fashion, yet it could be argued that, after all, it has always been a little, and off the beaten track of human knowledge. Perhaps people do not want to reason and question the meaning of their existence and that of the human beings who preceded them. The figure of Procopius of Caesarea, because of its remoteness in time and its bringing together different planes of interpretation of historical events, the presentable and avowedly noble one, together with the less edifying side of the protagonists of the same events, brings with it a series of questions about the meaning of historical narrative, topics that will be discussed in this film.

In questo filmato si illustra la vicenda esistenziale del maggiore storico del VI secolo d.C., cui dobbiamo le cronache più dettagliate del regno dell’Imperatore Giustiniano (527-565) e delle guerre da lui intraprese per riconquistare le terre dell’Occidente e dell’Africa perse dall’Impero Romano. I personaggi narrati da Procopio, Giustiniano, Teodora, il generale Belisario e sua moglie Antonina, presentano una versione biografica ufficiale contenuta negli otto libri della “Storia delle Guerre” e una molto meno celebrativa, a tratti pesantemente denigratoria, conservata in un piccolo libro, le “Storie Segrete”, o “Aneddoti di Procopio”, rimasto nascosto negli archivi di stato a Bisanzio e in Vaticano per secoli e riportato alla luce e alla conoscenza degli storici soltanto nel XVII secolo.

This film illustrates the life story of the greatest historian of the 6th century A.D., to whom we owe the most detailed chronicles of the reign of Emperor Justinian (527-565) and the wars he waged to reconquer the lands of the West and Africa lost to the Roman Empire. The characters narrated by Procopius, Justinian, Theodora, the general Belisarius and his wife Antonina, present an official biographical version contained in the eight books of the 'History of Wars' and a much less celebratory, at times heavily disparaging version preserved in a small book, the 'Secret Histories', or 'Anecdotes of Procopius', which remained hidden in state archives, in Byzantium and the Vatican, for centuries and was only brought to light and to the knowledge of historians in the 17th century.
