Eliminate Stair Steps With Short Row Shaping // Technique Tuesday

This video demonstrates how to convert stair stepped horizontal edges to sloped edges using short rows. A sloped edge is a more attractive finish, and the live sts can be joined to another edge of live sts using a three needle bind off, which is sturdy, but much less bulky than seaming together two pieces of fabric with stair stepped BO edges.

Instructions for stair stepped shaping and sloped short row shaping:
Slopes with longer left edge, shorter right edge
Stair step instructions
CO 20 sts. Work in stockinette stitch for 4 rows, beginning with a RS row.
Row 5 (RS): BO 7, knit to end of row. (13 sts)
Row 6: Purl.
Row 7: BO 7, knit to end of row. (6 sts)
Row 8: Purl.
Row 9: BO 6.

To work this as sloped shaping, using short rows
CO 20 sts. Work in stockinette stitch for 3 rows, beginning with a RS row.
Row 4 (WS): Purl across, stopping 7 sts before end of row. Turn and work short row technique.
Row 5: Knit to end of row.
Row 6: Purl across, stopping 7 sts before previous short row turn.
Row 7: Knit to end of row.
Row 8: Purl across all sts.
Row 9: Bind off all sts (regular BO or join to another set of live sts using 3 needle BO).

Slopes with longer right edge, shorter left edge
Stair step instructions
CO 20 sts. Work in stockientte stitch for 5 rows, beginning with a RS rwo.
Row 6: (WS): BO 7, purl to end of row. (13 sts)
Row 7: Knit.
Row 8: BO 7, purl to end of row. (6 sts)
Row 9: Knit.
Row 10: BO 6.

To work this as sloped shaping, using short rows
CO 20 sts. Work in stockinette stitch for 4 rows, beginning with a RS row.
Row 5 (RS): Knit across, stopping 7 sts before end of row. Turn and work short row technique.
Row 6: Purl to end of row.
Row 7: Knit across, stopping 7 sts before previous short row turn.
Row 8: Purl to end of row.
