A new JL Partners poll for The Independent suggests a chunk of Labour’s own voters have lost confidence in Keir Starmer.
Among people who voted Labour in 2024, 38% said Labour would do better at the next election if Starmer stepped down, 39% said it would make no difference, 13% said Labour would do worse, and 10% weren’t sure. The poll surveyed 1,562 adults on 13–14 December 2025.
When asked who should replace him, Labour voters most often picked Andy Burnham (19%), then Angela Rayner (10%) and Lucy Powell (9%), but Burnham can’t run for leader under Labour rules because he isn’t an MP.
