I most closely associate the German Hymn tune Herzlich tut mich verlangen (written in the very early 1600s) with the hymn "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded." The themes and text of these hymns inspired this video, which features the beautiful Stations of the Cross at Sts. Anne and Joachim Church (Fargo, North Dakota.)
Johannes Brahms' Chorale Preludes were among his final compositions he wrote before his death in 1897. Each prelude takes a chorale tune and expands on it in a variety of ways. In this Chorale Prelude, the tune is played very slowly in the pedal and is accompanied by the manuals. Brahms also wrote several Preludes and Fugues for organ, but he is most commonly known by his works for orchestra, voice, and piano.
I practiced this piece on my digital practice organ at home. When I first brought it to the Rodgers/Hybrid organ at Sts. Anne and Joachim, I was surprised with how the lower tones of the manuals resonated not only within the church, but also within me. One can really feel and experience the music when physically in the room. While this is difficult to replicate online, I highly recommend listening to the video with headphones. I hope this video provides an opportunity to reflect on Christ's sacrifice for us - especially during the Lenten and Easter seasons.
