Messenger | Analog FM Synthesis

In this video, we explore how to create analog FM sounds using Messenger.

To begin, use LFO 2 to modulate the frequency (pitch) of the oscillators to create a vibrato effect. By increasing the rate of the modulating oscillator, we quickly depart from vibrato and enter the world of audio rate frequency modulation, creating new tonalities in the process. Using the 1-2 FM control in the oscillator section we can FM one oscillator with another, and using triangle waves gives us a wide timbral FM space to work with. We next look at how to use the filter envelope to control the modulation depth of our FM routing for classic plucky FM sounds. Using the multitrig functionality and velocity sensitivity of the filter envelope gives us even deeper control of our FM sound.
