Island Ford Cave in Covington, Virginia

We've been here before, but this time we stayed longer and made our way deeper inside this awesome cave located near Covington and Clifton Forge, Virginia.
There are over 4000 known caves in Virginia. Island Ford Cave is listed on the Virginia Significant Caves List. The cave contains over 1400 feet of passageways and extends over 550 feet into the hillside where it is located. The cave has a developed "dry level" as well as a lower level containing a small creek. There are a number of cave adapted organisms that live in the waters inside the cave. It is believed that the creek exits the cave and flows into the Jackson River somewhere below the cave entrance; however, this has never been confirmed.
While any cave is an extremely treacherous place, Island Ford Cave is relatively easy to visit and explore and generally does not require any specialty skills or equipment. The cave is owned and managed by the West Virginia Cave Conservancy.
