Ferrari 456GTA Major Service – Engine Reassembly & Sealing

Proper cam cover sealing is the difference between a clean Ferrari 456 and a chronic oil leaker.

In Part Five of this Ferrari 456GTA Major Service series, I begin the engine reassembly process on Ferrari’s V12, bringing together the work completed in the earlier episodes. This stage focuses on methodical assembly, sealing, and attention to detail to ensure everything goes back together correctly and remains leak-free.

In this video, I reinstall the cam covers and timing belt covers, install and tension the ancillary belts, and refit the intake manifold and air inlets. As part of the service, I also remove the fuel injectors for flow testing, cleaning, and re-testing, ensuring balanced fueling before the engine is started. The bulk of this episode centers on cam cover installation and sealing techniques. The factory gasket design on the Ferrari 456 is less than ideal and is well known for developing leaks, so I walk through the modifications, sealants, and methods I use to seal these covers properly and keep them leak-free through the next timing belt service.

At this stage, final assembly is temporarily paused while I wait for the radiator to return from the radiator shop. Without the radiator installed, the oil cooler, air boxes, and air filters cannot be refitted, which prevents the engine from being run in this episode. While the engine does not start in this video, the focus remains on doing the reassembly work correctly rather than rushing the process.
