HOW TO: Use an M1 Muzzle Erosion Gauge

Today we will look at the M1 Garand and how to use the muzzle erosion/muzzle wear gauge. If you plan to buy an M1 rifle or barrel there are a couple of things you will need to be aware of. The first is referred to as "muzzle erosion", or "muzzle wear." This is a measurement of the wear on the lands of the rifling in the muzzle of your barrel. There are many things that can cause muzzle wear and well used military barrels were probably exposed to them at some point in their lives. Lots of M1s returned to the USA from Korea have severe muzzle erosion caused by firing rifle grenades from them. Of course, simple use such as firing and not getting to clean the rifle during extended combat conditions, especially when using corrosive primers, will wear the barrel, and not jut the muzzle. The gauges demonstrated in this video will help you to know the extent of wear or erosion your barrel has been exposed to.
