About the Winnemem Wintu Tribe:
The Winnemem Wintu Tribe has been battling to protect their sacred waters and the Chinook salmon, which are central to their spiritual and ecological heritage. After the construction of Shasta Dam in 1945, the salmon were blocked from reaching their spawning grounds, leading to their near extinction. Despite being a small tribe, the Winnemem Wintu have led campaigns, protests, and restoration efforts to bring the salmon back and protect their sacred lands.

Our Impact:
• In 2022, the tribe successfully worked with government agencies to transport salmon eggs past Shasta Dam to their ancestral spawning grounds for the first time in nearly 80 years.
• Developed an innovative nature-based incubation system to protect salmon eggs, which is currently being tested.
• Led the Run4Salmon initiative, a 300-mile annual journey tracing the salmon's path from Mt. Shasta to the Pacific Ocean, raising awareness for the species’ restoration.
• Signed agreements with state and federal agencies to co-manage salmon restoration efforts and preserve traditional ecological knowledge.
