The First Governor-General of India || The Story of Warren Hasting

Warren Hastings was the first Governor-General of India, serving from 1773 to 1785. He played a significant role in establishing British rule in India and laid the administrative foundation for the British East India Company’s control. Hastings introduced various reforms in administration, revenue collection, and the judicial system. However, his tenure was controversial, particularly due to his aggressive policies and conflicts with regional powers, including the Marathas.

After returning to Britain, Hastings faced impeachment on charges of corruption and abuse of power. His trial, led by Edmund Burke, was one of the longest in British history, lasting seven years (1788–1795), but he was ultimately acquitted.
