Finnish Wedding - Bride gets swatted by her bridesmaids before her wedding | Getting Married (2/5)

It is no coincidence that he is travelling in the far north of Europe: he is interested in why the Finns of all people have been voted the happiest nation in the world by the UN. What is their formula for happiness? He not only asks the bridal couple, the kindergarten teacher Marjo (26) and the salesman Tomi (30), but also meets a luck researcher and the probably most famous inhabitant of Lapland - Santa Claus.

But the film focuses on the bridal couple's personal formula for happiness. What do the days before the wedding and the big day itself look like? The bride meets for a special ceremony with her best friends in the sauna. She sweats out her ex-lovers in a T-shirt. This is how she is cleaned before the wedding. Meanwhile, the groom has shot an elk with his father-in-law, which he deep-fried for the wedding party in a familiar men's circle. The bride and groom's reindeer shoes are ready for colder times on the fireplace.

The wedding itself takes place in a red wooden hut for half an hour out in the lonely woods of Rovaniemi's surroundings. Everything was decorated and prepared by the couple themselves. Photos of the animals on the buffet testify to the heroic deeds of the hunters. So, you can proudly see Tomi with a huge fish, which he caught while fly fishing and which is now roasted and prepared for the guests. Again, and again the men go out and meet behind trees. There they have hidden alcohol, which they drink secretly. Of course, the women know what's going on. Everyone playfully handles the old custom from times when alcohol was forbidden at weddings.

A Finnish proverb says: "All you need for ultimate happiness are your own red wooden hut and a potato field. Perhaps other nations can also learn something from this modesty?

What are the differences between the ceremonies? What is the most important thing about a wedding across cultures and countries? How do the preparations work? How to find the perfect wedding dress? What role does religion play? What goes wrong? And how does it feel to say yes to one's life?

Presenter and producer Andreas Korn come amazingly close to the wedding couples. He laughs, suffers, cries and celebrates with them. One of his favorite rituals: "I really liked how in Finland the bride and her best friends sweated out their ex-lovers in the sauna. And when she ran around the hut and shouted the names out loud to be free for marriage, I had to laugh a lot. A super ritual!”

And despite all the differences between weddings, one thing is the same everywhere: love. No matter who marries whom where in Europe.
