Hey everyone, welcome back to my channel! Today, I'm super excited to share an unforgettable kayaking adventure I had at Steamboat Rock State Park in Washington. If you're into stunning desert landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and that perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, this trip is going to blow you away. Let me take you through it step by step – grab your paddle, and let's dive in!
We kicked things off at the Steamboat Rock State Park boat launch, sliding our kayaks into the calm waters of Banks Lake. Right from the start, the vibe was incredible. We paddled around the south and east sides of Steamboat Rock, making our way up to the north end. Steamboat Rock itself is this massive, 800-foot-high rocky desert butte that towers over everything – it's like paddling in the shadow of a natural fortress, providing the most dramatic backdrop you can imagine.
As we glided along, I couldn't get over how amazing Banks Lake is. The water was this stunning clear blue, and the sandy bottom made it feel like we were in some tropical paradise, but right here in the desert! The scenery all around was spectacular – vast, rugged desert vistas stretching out in every direction, with that perfect blend of arid beauty and serene water. It was one of those moments where you just pause and think, "Wow, this is why I love getting out on the water."
Once we reached the north end of Steamboat Rock, we crossed over Banks Lake to the beautiful northeast coastline. That's where things got even better – we spotted this little hidden beach that was absolute perfection. We pulled up our kayaks, jumped in for a refreshing swim, soaked up the sun, and unpacked our picnic lunch. The water was nice and cool, just what you need on a warm day, and that sandy bottom made swimming feel effortless and fun. We relaxed there for a while, chatting and taking in the views – pure bliss!
Refueled and ready to go after lunch, we continued paddling along the northeast shoreline. We came across this cool feature we nicknamed "Hole in the Wall" – it's like nature carved out a secret passage in the rocks, and exploring it from the kayak was such a thrill. From there, we pushed on to an even more interesting spot: a tombolo with a long sand spit stretching out to a rocky island. It felt like discovering a hidden gem, perfect for snapping some epic photos or just marveling at how the lake shapes the land.
Finally, from the tombolo, we turned southwest and paddled back toward Steamboat Rock State Park for our pull-out. The return trip gave us more time to appreciate the surroundings, and by the time we wrapped up, I was already planning my next visit.
What I loved most about this kayak day trip? Hands down, it was the dramatic desert scenery on all sides – that raw, wild beauty that makes you feel so alive. Paired with the blue, clear water and that soft sandy bottom, it was ideal for swimming and cooling off. The lake itself was refreshingly cool, turning a simple paddle into a full-on rejuvenating escape. If you're looking for an accessible adventure that's equal parts stunning and serene, Steamboat Rock is a must-do!
