Located in Room 213 of the Hasjim Asjarie Building, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Negeri Jakarta (FMIPA UNJ) hosted the inauguration of its Genomics Technology Installation. This equipment, a generous donation from the Satriabudi Dharma Setia Foundation (YSDS), positions FMIPA UNJ at the forefront of genomic research.
The collaboration between FMIPA UNJ and YSDS includes several key initiatives, such as an Introduction to Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) and training sessions for MinION/PromethION devices. These sessions will take place starting July 1, 2024, with the first day dedicated to Sample Preparation and Extraction and the second day focused on Library Preparation and Sequencing, conducted in the Molecular Physiology Laboratory on the 8th floor of the Hasjim Asjarie Building.
This collaboration also welcomed representatives from various institutions, including Saraswanti Genomics Institute (SGI), Universitas Lambung Mangkurat (ULM), Universitas Waradewa (UNWAR), Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), Universitas Nusa Cendana (UNDANA), Universitas Pamulang (UNPAM), and Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT). Additionally, prominent figures such as Prof. Iwan Sugihartono, the Head of LPPM UNJ, the Dean of FMIPA UNJ, and other university officials were present to commemorate the event.
Prof. Muktiningsih expressed her gratitude for the significant collaboration, highlighting its substantial contribution to researchers at UNJ, particularly within FMIPA. "With this equipment, we are increasingly driven to actualize a genomic database using the necessary sequencing tools required by higher education institutions," she stated.
Dr. Dalia Sukmawati also conveyed her aspirations that this equipment would enable UNJ to become a genomics hub, where the entire genomic process could be conducted within the Biology Department of FMIPA UNJ. "Not only have we received the equipment, but YSDS has also provided training funds and materials. We hope that the entire learning process in the Biology Department will be more up-to-date and have tremendous potential to support UNJ in preparing for its transition to a PTN-BH, where departments are expected to be self-sufficient," she added.
