These patches typically develop in areas with folds or creases, such as the neck, armpits, groin, and sometimes on the joints of the fingers or toes. While it can affect people of any age, it's most commonly seen in individuals who are overweight or have conditions like type 2 diabetes. It can also be associated with hormonal disorders, certain medications, or as a genetic trait. Acanthosis nigricans itself isn't harmful or contagious, but it can be a sign of an underlying health issue that needs attention, such as insulin resistance or endocrine disorders.


The treatment of acanthosis nigricans typically involves addressing the underlying cause or condition that is contributing to its development. Here are some common approaches:

Weight loss: If the individual is overweight or obese, losing weight can often improve or even resolve acanthosis nigricans, especially if it's associated with insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome.
Managing underlying conditions: Treating conditions such as diabetes, insulin resistance, hormonal imbalances, or certain medications that may be causing or exacerbating acanthosis nigricans can help improve the condition.
Topical treatments: In some cases, topical treatments such as retinoids or keratolytics may be prescribed to help reduce the thickness and darkness of the affected skin patches. These treatments work by promoting skin cell turnover and reducing the buildup of darkened skin cells.
Oral medications: In more severe cases or when topical treatments aren't effective, oral medications such as metformin or isotretinoin may be prescribed to help improve the condition.
Lifestyle modifications: Adopting a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding excessive sun exposure, can help improve overall skin health and may help reduce the severity of acanthosis nigricans.
