There is a fantastic 5 hour train journey from Glasgow to Mallaig through the West Highlands. I made it in August 2017, took the ferry over to Skye and then did a long walk from the town of Broadford across the mountain bogs to the site of the village of Boreraig, forcibly cleared by the agents of Lord MacDonald to make way for sheep in 1853. These expulsions of poor communities to make way for sheep happened in many locations and are collectively know as the Highland Clearances.
