Opening Keynote - “Britain’s Imperial Crisis: Imperial Overreach, Accidental Failure, or Both?”

Developments both in Britain itself and in Anglo-French relations set the backdrop of the unfolding crisis in British North America from 1754 to 1783. What brought about that crisis engages a larger question of imperial decline for the British over a longer period between 1745 and 1805 with Edward Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, whose first volume appeared in 1776, a touchstone highlighting themes.
