The crossing begins!
After a horror night at Dalhousie Springs we are up early and ready to take on the Simpson. After a quick stop at the 'dump' to off load our garbage, we are away. The terrain slowly begins to change from harder sand/gravel, to the iconic soft, red sand. Drama hits though as Woolie has an off, but thankfully there's no damage to him or the bike. It's not the only fall for the day!
We pass by Purnie Bore but decide not to stop, before finally entering the Simpson Desert itself and locating the 'French Line'. From this moment on it all changes! The dunes get bigger and softer, and the riding gets more demanding, and we start to have some falls due to the difficulty increase.
It's quite evident that we aren't going fast enough both up and down the dunes, but it's day one and we have't yet settled in to the mindset we need.
After around 130kms we decide to make camp and enjoy a fire and a good meal before bunking down to get some sleep to face the next day!
