This is the first successful live recording of a new song of mine that was written a week before this performance. I had tried to record it on the day I wrote it, but felt that there were problems with some of the phrasing, so I revised it the next day, and recorded a home studio version that I posted at that time. I specifically wrote this song under the influence of the work of Pete Seeger, and shared it on the 106th anniversary of his birth. As usually happens, the subsequent live version, while technically less perfect than the studio version, is faster and has more spark of life and emotion that comes from direct communication with the audience in front of me.
I'm playing a 1910 Fairbanks Banjo here , strung with period appropriate synthetic gut strings tuned eAEAF# (Open C tuning, tuned down to A). I use mostly old-time thumb-lead two-finger picking here, with a small smattering of clawhammer style bits from time to time.
This was recorded on 9 May 2025 as the evening opening song at the weekly Yellow Door Hootenanny, which I host in downtown Montréal, Québec, Canada.
