The story behind this song:
When Ustad Vilayat Khan (Abba) was a child, he once heard a woman wandering the streets, singing a single line over and over: “tana na maro mohe teer laage re raja.” She was out of tune, disheveled, seemingly distressed - as if carrying the weight of some deep hurt. Abba’s compassionate side was stirred, and though he never saw her again, the line stayed with him.
Years later, he shaped it into a full composition, adding: “Tana O Teer Tanik Nahi Bhaave, More Naino Ke Nikke Meet Laage Re Raja” and performed it on stage.
Much later, I wrote and added two antras to complete the piece, and recorded it for Music Today about 15 years ago. Abba was very happy with that recording - it's a memory I hold close.
