The last of the prestigious dancers trained by Diaghilev, it was almost by accident that Serge Lifar, son of a Russian civil servant, born in kyiv on April 2, 1905, discovered his way on a certain day in 1920 when, enjoying wandering the streets of the city in the chaos of the Bolshevik revolution, his adolescent steps led him to the school of Bronislava Nijinska where he remained dumbfounded at the sight of the dancers at the barre:
"I had come out of a chaotic world" he wrote in 1965 in My Life, "and I had found order and harmony".
Choreographer, theoretician, prolific author (he wrote 25 books in which he recounts his career and his theories of experimental choreography) or lecturer (he introduced dance to the Sorbonne in 1947 with the creation of the Institut Chorégraphique de Paris, renamed in 1957 the University of Dance), Serge Lifar promoted and contributed to the development, dissemination and modernization of choreographic art throughout the world.
