Mailly Wood Cemetery – Autumn Rain on the Somme | Cemeteries of the Fallen

Today’s journey takes us to Mailly Wood Cemetery, just outside the village of Mailly-Maillet, in the northern sector of the Somme.
Filmed in Autumn 2024 on a rainy day, we follow the wet track beyond the main road, past the old stone walls of a once-grand house, and into the quiet fields that hide this beautiful and rarely-visited cemetery.

Mailly Wood Cemetery was begun by front-line units holding this ground during 1915–1917. It sits close to the trenches and strongpoints that overlooked the Ancre valley, and many who lie here were involved in the winter fighting, patrol actions, and early stages of the Battle of the Somme.

For over three years we’ve travelled the Western Front — from Albert and Château Valvion (Haig’s HQ during Somme planning) to Ypres, Fromelles, and the fortified town of Bergues — visiting the cemeteries and landscapes where the fallen still rest.
