Sequined clothing, absinthe, and swing music -- the spirit of the twenties is once more taking hold of the Berlin party scene. "Bohème Sauvage" is the name of a series of parties held by the Gesellschaft für mondäne Unterhaltung (Sophisticated Entertainment Company), which recaptures the golden twenties lifestyle once each month. Each party is in a different location. They are held at the Wintergarten-Varieté or in the Grüne Salon of the Volksbühne, the Bassy Club and Reingold have also been used. For one night, nostalgia fans take on a new persona and act as if they were living in the twenties. On the dance floor, they dance to the Charleston and swing music, and in the smoky backroom, bet imitation Reichsmarks on blackjack, roulette and poker.

There is a strict dress code in force: If you cannot show that you are at least wearing suspenders and a hat, you will be turned away at the door. But most of the partygoers go all out getting dressed up in any case: Charleston dresses, feather boas, silk stockings, evening bags, and satin gloves are the order of the day for the ladies. Men can generally be found in a pinstripe suit or tuxedo with a bow tie and pocket handkerchief.

The main drink served for the evening is absinthe, which is available with or without the aniseed flavor. At the Bohème Sauvage, the authentic habit of infusing sugar cubes with the absinthe is used. The sugar is then caramelized, stirred into the absinthe, and the glass is topped up with water.
