In the words of Neil Blumenthal; “details matter, they create depth and depth creates authenticity".
Authenticity is such a valuable trait that is very common in the Benga music played between 1960-2002.
While I’m not so conversant with the Benga pioneers, I’m better positioned to comment about those who led the surge between 1978 and 1998 being with the fall from glory for that generation from 2002 onwards.
Songs Like “Hey to Connie” of George Ramogi, “Apidi nyar John, dhok Tungn dhano, Ki Loko gueno and Be nunyal” all of Odongo Agwata, “Hera mar mbese, Philo hera kende and Kodh auka nokelnai” all of Collela Mazee, “Come on Vicky, Jane the Slim, Lizah and Hera gima rumo” all of Ouma Omore, “Hully Aoko series and Jagedo ma janguono” by Brother Charlly, “Bim en Bim, MV Bukoba and Raibow” by D.O Misiani, “Ndeko Owilly and Yote yataisha” by Prince Jully, “Mayienga Ford and Pauline oloko paro” by Opiyo Emma, “Caro bens and Joseph Oduogo”by Ndugu Rabby, “Asembo piny maber” by Osito Kale, “Anjeli nyar Siaya” by Awino Lawi, “Mary nyar Gem” by Odol, “Pamela min Dolly” by Onyango Orego rego e.t.c are too authentic to even ask for the lyrics.
There are thousands of such if we were to open the 1978-2002 Benga files but that is for another day.
Patrick Jaji Miledha, wuod Oloo nyakwar Oluengo gi Mise was equally authentic. This Ja Kalisuria had a short stint in music but he left lasting marks. I do not know how many Bands Jaji took part in but I remember Victoria Jazz, Gloria Kings and Jolly Boys.
This song, “Adong buga” (I’ve been left without any offsprings) is one of his best.
The lady object of the composition; Milly Anyango must have been fine.
Those who took part in the making of this song included;
Oguda OTC (Drums/percussion), Jaji Miledha (3rd vocals and Solo), Otoyo Kamwanda (Lead Vocals), Omondi Senior (2nd vocals), Odongo Agwata (Bass), Ali Oyuech Malago (1st Rhythm), Ndugu Maulidi Dilunga (2nd Rhythm).
It’s not clear to me what roles Prince Jully, Ouma Omore, Agumba Sheik and Khalifa Mayele played in this song.
Despite being born in a highly religious family Miledha found his passion in secular music and did it with zeal. He had talent and good command of Solo, Rhythm and vocals besides being a top notch composer.
He was authentic in his compositions that many music lovers could listen to most of his songs repeatedly without tiring the ears and the feeling.
Some day I’ll find out more about Jaji wuod Oloo to share in another song.
Be blessed all.
