The General Electric company conducted rigorous tests, deliberately pushing prototype engines to their limits to ensure they could withstand the harsh conditions of flight. On this test day, the engineering team was simulating the challenges the GE9X might face while powering a Boeing Triple 7X on the runway of a remote desert.

The UAE is home to Emirates and Qatar Airways two of the world’s largest airlines. Along with Etihad, they account for more than half of all Boeing Triple 7X orders, the exclusive platform for the GE9X engine. And it was these extreme tests that led Emirates to double its order in just one week of testing, adding 202 more GE9X engines and bringing its total to 460 units. Surrounded by the unforgiving desert, Dubai isn’t just a venue for aviation discussions it’s the epicenter of sandstorms, much like the ones GE Aerospace engineers recreated to push this powerful engine to its limits. They hurled grapefruit-sized rocks and blasted torrents of water into the engine, simulating the most extreme atmospheric conditions it could encounter.
