Welcome back to RBR! Today we review the all-new #BMW #M5Touring (G99) — and I honestly think we’re lucky this car even exists. Because before this generation, the #BMWM M5 Touring was hardly a sales success at all. The first-ever E34 M5 Touring (1992–95) was hand-built, left-hand drive only, and sold under 900 units. Then came the bonkers E61 M5 Touring, powered by the legendary 5.0L V10 with 507hp and flared arches. It was epic, but only 1,025 were ever made, with just 222 right-hand-drive mostly coming to the UK. After that, BMW gave up on the idea. They didn’t believe in the performance wagon, and honestly, neither did most customers back then.

Fast-forward to 2025, and the market has completely flipped. We are all wagon obsessed! Audi’s RS6 Avant, despite being near the end of its life, is breaking sales records — up 41% in the first half of 2025 compared to 2024. And BMW’s own M3 Touring (G81) has been a revelation: in the UK nearly half of all M3 buyers chose the Touring over the sedan. Globally, it’s been outselling expectations seeing a massive 57% uptick in 2024 — proof that the market needs more.

And all of this is happening in a time when governments are shoving the EV agenda down our throats, performance cars are under attack, and manufacturers like AMG have cowered with products like the 4-cylinder C63. Against that backdrop, BMW M have doubled down. Instead of abandoning what makes an M car, they made the M3 touring, a car that never existed, in a pure M format. Now they’ve gone bigger: the return of the M5 Touring, and this time worldwide including in the USA at last!

And this G99 brings huge numbers with 727PS & 1,000Nm, thought a less impressive 0–62mph in 3.5s (tested for real today!). Most of that comes from the S68 V8 engine, linked to a 8 speed torque convertor. The rest of the formula is typical M5, with M adaptive suspension with active dampers, rigidity tripled down, drive and M sport differential, rear wheel steer, and more! But the weird part is the hybrid — now with a 19.2kWh battery giving 43 miles EV range, and up to 190HP more - but for a penalty of 2,435kg kerb weight (yes, half a tonne more than the old M5).

Did BMW have to make a hybrid? We will discuss this today. And while it’s polarising — the sales figures say otherwise. Six months in, the Touring makes up 50% of M5 orders globally, and in the USA demand for the wagon has actually surpassed the sedan! Incredible!

The M3 seems to be faster, purer, cheaper, but not worse inside. So where does this car sit? I’d not perfect — it’s wide, it’s heavy, and the V8 isn’t as loud as we’d like. So it may not be the M5 you remember — but maybe it’s something more? Let’s find out!
