I had to look into the group Fantasy to find out why their biggest hit ever sounded like Chic, the disco chart topping "You're Too Late" released in late 1980. The synth sonic makes the song sparkle and the lead vocal by Fonda Rae really stands out. Fonda is a session singer who struck out on her own in 1982 to record "Over Like A Fat Rat" a #22 disco chart hit, that has become a goldmine for samples used by many contemporary R&B artists to bedrock their lyrics. She had already hit #1 disco singing lead on "Deputy Of Love" for two weeks! The background vocals were handled by ex-Chic vocalists Luci Martin and Norma Jean Wright along with Chrissy Faith, Clare Bathé and Cathy Ingraham. Bathé is best known for her apocalyptic vocals on Machine's "There But For The Grace Of God Go I", but search out the Machine video for "Mr Destiny", it's better showcase for her less frantic with an updated 50's shuffle style. In any case "You're Too Late" was #1 in the clubs for five weeks and got knocked off by the one-two punch from Blondie, the double A sided hit single "The Tide Is High"/"Rapture". Ironically, "You're Too Late" ended Kool & The Gang's five week run at #1 with "Celebration". The prominent bass and drum track with a decidedly Chic vocal style of "Good Times" with a middle range tempo and a piano lick that adds a funky style made this one irresistible. It still sounds fresh forty years later.
