This 1960s British Army recruiting film offers a rare inside look at the training and early career of soldiers joining the Intelligence Corps. The documentary follows a group of new recruits from the first days of basic training through to the specialised skills required for intelligence work during the Cold War era.
The film begins with the fundamentals: drill, weapons handling and fitness training. Once the recruits have mastered the basics, they move on to Intelligence Corps trade training. Here they learn office administration, the collation and recording of intelligence, photographic interpretation, cordon and search techniques and the essentials of counter-intelligence. As the course progresses, the training class eventually divides, with soldiers posted to a range of operational units.

The documentary then widens its focus, showing the environments and tasks that British forces were likely to encounter across the world in the 1960s. Scenes include operations in Singapore, Malaya and Hong Kong, reflecting Britain’s global military commitments during the period. The film also depicts a cordon and search operation in Kenya towards the end of the Mau Mau insurgency, where British troops surround a house, search the occupants and uncover an illegal weapon before taking suspects away for questioning.
Focused, disciplined and wide-ranging, the film provides a compelling glimpse into the work of the Intelligence Corps and the vital role of intelligence gathering in overseas operations.
