LIVE STEAM Model Trains at the N.C. Transportation Museum! (Steam Over Spencer 2025)

On March 8th, 2025, we headed to one of my favorite railroad museums of all time, the North Carolina Transportation Museum. Located in Spencer, North Carolina, the property was once home to Southern Railway’s largest repair and overhaul facility. Everything from boiler washes to complete overhauls were done at this site, and at one point, over 75 locomotives rolled in and out of the shops daily. Today, the grounds host the collection of the North Carolina Transportation Museum, which tells the story of all kinds of transportation in North Carolina, but the main attraction is the railroad aspect of the museum. Today, a special once-a-year event is taking place, Steam Over Spencer, a get-together of several gauge-one model train enthusiasts. Only these models are different from normal models, as they run not by electricity, but by steam power.
