Using a K&F Concept FD To EF Lens Adapter on a Canon EOS 7D

Having gotten excellent results from their M42 to EF lens adapter I was curious to see how this adapter would compare especially given that it has optical correction glass in it.

For those who don’t know, Canon’s FD mount was superseded by the EF mount in the 1980’s much like the EF mount has now been superseded by the RF mount. Nevertheless, FD glass is still sought after for its optical quality & relative low cost mainly by film makers & mirrorless camera owners.

I chose to use my Canon F/2.8 35mm lens for this test/comparison as it is one of the sharpest vintage lenses I have ever come across.

What I discovered using this lens with the adapter is that even though the blurb on Amazon stated infinity focus could be achieved this was however not my experience, the focus was limited to just short of the lenses maximum focus distance as shown on the lens. What this means is there is no chance of hyperfocus and makes using this adapter with any FD lenses problematic if you are a landscape photographer, because of this limitation I would not recommend this adapter for anything other than close work.

Despite the adapters limitations I was still able to achieve some good results when shooting at shorter distances but even so there was colour fringing when shooting anywhere near into the direction of the sun. I also experience lens flare in some shots which wasn’t cause by the lens I was using but instead from the optical lens in the adapter, this I did not expect. I also found a small but noticeable loss of lens sharpness, but this is only really evident when viewing images up close.

So, to summarise. This adapter is a quirky little thing to play around with but due to its limitations I would not use it for any kind of serious work.
