After a drug deal gone wrong, a bruised detective must fight his way through the criminal underworld to rescue a politician's estranged son, unravelling a deep web of corruption and conspiracy that ensnares his entire city.
Dupe VFX’s work on Havoc focused on delivering a large-scale, high-energy truck chase sequence that evolved significantly throughout production. The sequence began with an advanced previs approach developed in close collaboration with director Gareth Evans. Using Unreal Engine, animated previs was created to map out key action beats, with iPad-based AR tools supporting on-location research and development. This setup allowed hands-on control of virtual cameras and action, with previs shots delivered as QuickTime files for editorial use.
As production progressed, the creative scope shifted dramatically. What was initially designed as previs support for live-action shooting became a fully CG chase sequence, retaining only greenscreen elements for stunt and actor performances. This transition required a complete workflow overhaul while preserving the strongest elements of the original previs, including precise camera movement and carefully choreographed action.
Several technical challenges emerged during this shift. Environment scaling had to be increased by 100% due to editorial overlap, and Unreal Engine camera data required extensive reworking, as the original setup had not been designed for full CG delivery. These challenges ultimately led to significant pipeline refinements, strengthening Dupe VFX’s previs-to-final-shot workflow.
The move to full CG also placed heavy demands on the studio’s infrastructure and 3D pipeline. Universal Scene Description (USD) became a core component of the workflow, requiring ongoing research and development. To support the increased complexity, Dupe VFX expanded render capacity, storage, server infrastructure, and artist workstations, while also scaling internal leadership and department structure.
The strong creative vision established during previs remained a driving force throughout production. Gareth Evans’ direction, combined with additional creative leadership from Charlie Noble and Kieron Helsdon, helped carry the sequence through to completion. Over the course of three years, hundreds of artists and technicians contributed to the project, resulting in a technically ambitious and visually dynamic sequence that reflects the evolution of Dupe VFX’s pipeline and production capabilities.
