Mean (Arithmetic Mean)
The mean of a given set of observations is the value obtained by dividing the sum of all observations by the total number of observations.
For grouped data, the mean is calculated by three methods:
1️⃣ Direct Method
This method is used when calculations are simple.
Formula:
Where:
= class mark (mid-value of class)
 = frequency
Steps:
Find class marks .
Multiply each with corresponding .
Find and .
Apply the formula.
✅ Best when values are small and easy to calculate.
2️⃣ Assumed Mean Method
This method simplifies calculations by assuming a convenient mean.
Formula:
Where:
 = assumed mean

Steps:
Choose an assumed mean .
Find deviations .
Multiply with .
Apply the formula.
✅ Useful when values are large.
3️⃣ Step Deviation Method
This is the shortest and fastest method.
Formula:
Where:

 = class width
Steps:
Choose assumed mean .
Find step deviations .
Multiply with .
Apply the formula.
✅ Best when class intervals are equal.
📌 Conclusion
Direct Method → Simple data
Assumed Mean Method → Large values
Step Deviation Method → Equal class intervals
