John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) is an action thriller directed by Chad Stahelski and starring Keanu Reeves as legendary assassin John Wick. Picking up shortly after the events of the first film, the story follows John as he tries to return to retirement after retrieving his stolen car. However, he is soon forced back into the criminal underworld when Santino D’Antonio, an Italian crime lord, calls in a blood oath that John is bound by honor to fulfill. When John refuses, his home is destroyed, and he is forced to honor the deal by assassinating Santino’s sister in Rome.
The film explores themes of loyalty, consequence, and the price of violence. John’s attempt to live a peaceful life is shattered by the inescapable rules of the assassin world he once served. As he carries out his mission, he finds himself betrayed and hunted, leading to intense confrontations with fellow assassins, including a memorable duel with Cassian, a rival bodyguard played by Common. The story expands the world introduced in the first film, diving deeper into the international network of assassins, secret societies, and strict codes of conduct that govern their operations.
