She asks the Commission “How are you letting people like my son Chris die horrific deaths under the care of Harris County Jail?”
The crisis of so many deaths in Texas jails of people who have mental health indicators needs to be addressed.
Christopher McGregor’s death in Harris County Jail is a tragic consequence of Texas criminalizing mental illness instead of treating it. Living with severe schizophrenia for a decade, Christopher was arrested more than ten times and hospitalized countless times, yet never connected to meaningful mental health care. Despite being found incompetent, he was released back into the community, left vulnerable and untreated. His mother was not even notified of any medical complications until after his death.
