The Most Meaningful Thing I Did in Kyoto | Bookbinding + Paper making

The most memorable experiences I had in Kyoto, hands down, was being able to learn at the hands of master artisans how to make my own journal, and how to make washi postcards from scratch.
As a lifelong stationery nerd, these experiences were very actualizing. Seeing what goes into the process, piece by piece, until the final product is completed was so enjoyable and educational.
The bookbinding experience was led by Tsutomo-san and his daughter. He has 60 years of experience in bookbinding, having learned and inherited the practice from his mother. And during the washi paper making I learned about the history of paper making in Japan, and the decline of the ecosystem around it in recent history.
