Wat Phou: A Journey Through Ancient Khmer History

Discover the magnificent Wat Phou, a remarkable Khmer historical site located on the western bank of the Mekong River. Vastly larger than Wat Tomo, Wat Phou features two expansive barays, two elegant palaces at its lower level, and a small temple on the upper level, surrounded by intriguing rock carvings.

Step back in time to explore the site's oldest structures, dating as far back as the 2nd century BCE. Though the original stone dwelling has collapsed, the remaining slabs offer a glimpse into the past. The rock carvings showcase an elephant figure, a serpent in a square pattern, and a meditation platform. The captivating Crocodile Stone, carved with an indent of a crocodile, adds an aura of mystery. According to a 6th-century text by a Chinese monk, this stone may have served as a site for human sacrifice.
