Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata Batte was a respected and outspoken Islamic cleric, educator, and social activist in Uganda. Born on February 5, 1962, in Bwaise, Kampala, he began his Islamic studies at Bilal Quran Islamic School before proceeding to the University of Madinah in Saudi Arabia, where he was ordained as a Sheikh.
Eng. Akram Gumisiriza is a Ugandan engineer and public figure known for his political ambitions and some controversies.
Political Ambitions:
In April 2024, he announced his intention to run for the presidency of Uganda in the 2026 general elections as an independent candidate. He chose the symbol of "Eyes," representing his ability to see from afar. After this announcement, he reported receiving political threats, which led him to relocate to the Western world for his safety and that of his family.
Legal Issues:
In October 2023, Gumisiriza was detained at Katwe Police Station in Kampala following allegations that he threatened a woman with a machete during a dispute. The incident reportedly happened after he picked up the woman from a bar, which led to a misunderstanding.
Personal Life:
He is married to Dr. Hajjat Kulthum Nabunya Muzaata, the widow of the late Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata Batte. Despite public scrutiny and controversies, Dr. Kulthum has publicly defended and supported him, promising to protect him in all situations.
Muzaata was renowned for his fearless and candid approach to public discourse. He served as the Director of Da’wa (Islamic propagation) and the official spokesperson of the Kibuli Muslim faction. Throughout his life, he fought for justice within the Ugandan Muslim community, championing causes such as the return of Muslim-owned properties and institutional reforms within Islamic leadership structures.
A firm believer in education and integrity, Muzaata introduced strict criteria for Islamic leadership roles. He insisted that candidates for Da’wa positions be university graduates in Sharia law, be aged between 40 and 70, and possess clean criminal records—efforts aimed at professionalizing religious leadership.
Sheikh Muzaata passed away on December 4, 2020, at the age of 58, following a brief illness. His death sparked widespread mourning across the country, and his funeral was attended by thousands, a testament to his influence and legacy. Today, he is remembered for his bold voice, his contributions to Islamic education, and his passionate defense of Muslim rights in Uganda.
