Swarna Agarwal’s (Communication Design, Batch 2021–2025) project, Bias in Focus, is a procedural motion research archive that examines how generative AI skews visual storytelling. Rooted in critical inquiry and system design, this independent research project interrogates the aesthetics of AI through hundreds of crowdsourced, tagged images that reveal 25 categories of bias—from gendered tropes to cultural erasure.
Structured around five core parameters, the interactive platform moves beyond passive consumption to enable nuanced analysis, encouraging users to reflect on the systemic distortions embedded in AI-generated content. With a design-first approach and motion-led research methodology, Bias in Focus offers a tool for creatives, researchers, and technologists to explore the intersection of automation, identity, and visual culture.
Provocative, data-driven, and deeply intentional, the project reframes how we engage with AI imagery—asking not just what we see, but why we see it. This project was mentored by Communication Design professor, Gagan Narhe.
