Emergency Orthodontics at the Drive-In | Week 18 Appalachian Trail Thru Hike (July 2023)

Week 18 marks an important moment on my Appalachian Trail adventure - it’s the week where we FINALLY cross the Pennsylvania / New Jersey state line. We are officially out of Rocksylvania.

Pennsylvania was important and it was a turning point in my trail journey. It was the first time on the trail where I felt like maybe I couldn’t finish this adventure. And it was where I mentally struggled the most thus far. Starting out Week 18 crossing that state line was a monumental moment of proving to myself that I could do this. Even when it wasn’t always fun anymore, I had it in me to push through and accomplish what I set out to do.

Other than getting the hell out of Pennsylvania, Week 18 consisted of moments where we enjoyed some beautiful wildlife, our second bear encounter, I make an emergency orthodontist trip, we camp at the drive-in, and cross our second state line of the week into NY.

As always, Week 18 was challenging but filled with adventure & magic. Even through all the hard moments, being on this trail means so much to me and I don’t take any day out here for granted.
