White Rock beach's famous pier's story begins in 1912, with the original pier resembling a simple 300-foot floating dock. After succumbing to winter storms in 1913, the community's resilience shone through as they rebuilt the pier in 1914, extending it to 800 feet, with aspirations of welcoming steamships from the Great Northern Railway. Though the First World War delayed its official debut, the pier was officially opened on November 14, 1914.

As the years passed, the pier saw numerous transformations and faced many challenges. By 1915, it stretched an impressive 1542 feet into Semiahmoo Bay, thanks to a federal extension. However, this marvel of engineering wasn't immune to the forces of nature and the passage of time, enduring multiple cycles of disrepair and restoration.


The 1950s brought a permanent solution to the pier's vulnerability to storms—a rock breakwater, safeguarding it against the relentless sea. Yet, the pier wasn't just a victim of the natural elements. It narrowly escaped fires, witnessed drag races in its heyday when cars were permitted, and even hosted the Dolphin Restaurant, a popular spot in the 1940s and 1950s.

Disaster struck again on December 20, 2018, when a violent windstorm unleashed chaos, destroying a significant section of the pier and prompting heroic Coast Guard rescues. Faced with a $16.2 million rebuild, the community's spirit never wavered. The pier was lovingly repaired and reopened in 2019, a testament to White Rock's resilience and dedication to preserving its crown jewel.


From its early days as a floating dock to becoming a central hub of community life and a symbol of endurance, White Rock Pier has stood the test of time. As we walk along this historic pier, we're not just stepping on wooden planks; we're walking through the pages of history, sharing in the memories and dreams of those who came before us.
