THE KNANAYA WEDDING CEREMONY - A WEDDING TO REMEMBER
After the "Mylanchi Ideel" Ceremony, the bride gets changed into a new dress and then is brought back to the wedding platform for the "Ichapaddu Kodukal" Ceremony. The brides most senior uncle ties a ceremonial turban and asks the crowd three times if he has permission to feed the bride "Ven Pachor", a sweet rice pudding. The first two times the crowd ignores the request stating they cannot hear him and the last they grant permission.
He then proceeds to rinse the brides mouth using a "Kindi" or ceremonial water vessel and washes his own hands as well. After doing so he takes a piece of the ven pachor and feeds the bride holding his arm in a ceremonial manner. After him other maternal uncles and male family members feed the bride in the same fashion.
Knanaya wedding traditions are ancient in origins and are the mixture of Syriac Christian, Judaic, and Hindu ritual practice merged into one alluding to the centuries the Knanaya have lived as a minority ethnic community in India. Each ceremony gives distinct roles to individual family members and is also accompanied by an ancient wedding or folk song characteristic of the Knanaya.
