We wanted to share an important update about our CST and CSFA examinations for 2024.

Like most organizations with accredited professional certification exams, NBSTSA only changes our passing score for the exams once every 4 to 5 years, at the end of a lengthy job analysis, test development, and standard-setting process. The process was overseen by multiple committees of CST and CSFA volunteers, many of whom are educators. At the end of 2023, we finally finished the process that we started in 2022. The Board recently approved the passing score changes.

Starting in 2024, the passing score for the CST examination was lowered from 102 to 98 out of 150 questions. Similarly, the passing score for the CSFA examination has been raised from 97 to 99 out of 150 scored questions. It’s important to note that the total number of questions on the exam is 175, out of which 25 are pre-test questions being tested for statistical analysis and potential use in future examinations.

We take great care to maintain the entry-level examination for both professions using a tried and tested examination development process. This ensures that the tests are equated from one year to the next as we launch new forms each year. So, a change in the passing score does not represent a change in the difficulty level of the examinations. We expect the national average first-time test-taker pass rates to remain the same in 2024 as in previous years.

These have not changed since 2022, but we do encourage you to always keep an up to date copy on hand because it shows exactly what major topics and subtopics are covered on our exams and even what percentage of the questions in each area that the test-taker will see on the examination.
