Fred Shuttleworth was born in Washington, DC, in 1949 and drafted into the Army in May 1969. He spent much of 1970 in Vietnam, serving in the mortar platoon of E Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment in the 101st Airborne Division in the norther part of South Vietnam. He participated in the Ripcord campaign that spring and summer, alternating between assignments in the field and in firebases, including Ripcord itself. After his Vietnam service, he returned to the US and was discharged in May 1971.
