Seaford Banksia Arboretum🌱
The Seaford Banksia Arboretum project is Ross Shepherd's dream that he has made into reality. Ross (The Banksia Man) has been into the Banksia proteaceae for around 40 years now; he loves the history behind it all' from the first discovery in Botany Bay by the Europeans, to the flower colours and the wildlife they attract! Ross moved to Seaford 10 years ago and discovered the Banksias grow like crazy in the fertile, sandy soils of that area. He had an idea to turn an area along Seaford Road, claimed by VicRoads and the local Frankston City Council, that was being used as a rubbish dump and it was an eyesore, into a native plant Banksia wonderland and wildlife corridor. Ross spent a couple of years gathering permits and funding, volunteers, etc., and now, three years on, the Banksia Arboretum is in full swing!
I had a great time meeting Ross for the first time; unfortunately, I had all kinds of trouble filming this video, from sound recording issues to losing the entire end of the video, so I've tried my best to rescue the footage I have.
I would like to pay my respects to the original custodians of this land, the Bunurong people.
Congratulations to Ross and all parties and volunteers involved.
Ross forgot to mention a big shout out to the Australian Native Plant Society for their donations and support, very much appreciated. 👍
