Laurie and Chris took an impromptu run up Moody Hill on Monday, October 13, 2025, in their 2025 Jeep Wrangler. Lee was out of town, so it was just the two of us this time. We encountered a few motorcycles and hikers along the way but were the only four-wheel vehicle on the trail that day.
Moody Hill is a popular off-road trail located west of Masonville, Colorado, in the Roosevelt National Forest. The trail climbs from about 6,500 to 8,000 feet and offers a mix of rocky ledges, steep grades, and tight switchbacks. The main trail is rated moderate, with optional obstacles that can challenge vehicles without lockers or lifted suspension.
The entire trip—from leaving our home in Fort Collins to returning—took about three hours. It’s roughly a 40-minute drive to the trailhead. We typically air down from 25 PSI to 12 PSI in about ten minutes and air back up in about fifteen. We also adjust the suspension stiffness between road and trail settings, which takes only a few seconds. On Moody Hill, we run in 4-low with the sway bars disconnected. Lockers aren’t needed for the main trail, though they come in handy on some of the optional climbs.
This video was captured with our Insta360 X5, with a few stills from our phones edited in. It’s also our first time experimenting with the Insta360 Mic Air Transmitter, which adds a second audio track and lets us start and stop recording from inside the vehicle.
We left around noon and got home by 3 p.m. The weather was mild—partly cloudy with just a light sprinkle on the way to the trail. Temperatures were in the 60s, though it felt cooler with the breeze. We noticed several downed trees from recent winds, but none blocking the main trail. Some spurs were partially obstructed.
